Face Paint for Beginners

How to transform into your favourite characters - at home!

Snazaroo face paint for beginners

If you’ve decided that you want to start your journey into the world of face painting and are unsure of where to begin, we’ve put together some tips and tricks that will help you get started. To find out industry secrets, how to get the best base and health and safety advice, look no further.

Managing Health And Safety Before You Begin

It’s important to make sure you’re maintaining good levels of health and safety to help keep both yourself and your children protected. From ingredients selection to manufacturing and packing, our face paints undergo the most stringent hygiene controls. When the hygiene seal is broken, you're the first person to have ever touched the 18ml paints or kit colours.

For more general guidance, if you’re painting your little ones, best practice is to only use one sponge per child and change the water in between each use. Ensure basic hygiene measures are followed such as handwashing and sanitising frequently. Get yourself a brush cleaner to use on your brushes and sponges in between each child and don’t double-dip!

All of Snazaroo’s face paints are water-based, so are great for sensitive skin. And they’re super easy to apply and to remove too! So, if you fancy trying out a few different techniques or characters you can just remove it with soap and water and start again.

Before you dive into creating a full face (check out our Youtube for some inspo!) here are a couple of basic techniques to help you craft your overall looks.

To create a perfect base, make sure you begin on clean and dry skin. Skip the moisturiser to make sure the face paints don’t slide off the skin. A pro tip is to spray the sponge with water first and rub between your palms to help the paint go on more effectively. Once you’ve got a good amount of paint on your sponge begin to dab the paint across the face. Try not to wipe or press too hard as this will create streaks and excess water. Once you have fully covered the face, you can then gently try to blend any harsh lines with the rounded end of your sponge. When your base has dried, you can begin the rest of the design!

Getting confident with line work will take your looks from zero to hero and the best way to do this is to practise! Get comfortable with your brushes by using them on the inside of your arm, testing the thickness and the pressure needed to apply the paint. Our pros swear by loading the brush with paint, rubbing it in until the consistency is creamy. Be careful of adding too much water to the paint as it will run down the brush and the pigment will be diluted. Quality brushes are essential for a professional-looking finish, Snazaroo offers a selection of pro brushes to help you create everything from very thin lines to teardrop shapes, swirls, petals and thicker lines.

Keep It Clean

Snazaroo Professional brushes and sponges

Top of the list for any face painter is keeping kits, brushes and sponges as clean as possible. Once you’re finished, wipe away any dirt or paint around your palettes. Throw away all of the disposable items safely in a bin bag.

Make sure to thoroughly wash and sanitise your brushes and sponges - you can do this with warm, soapy water or with a brush cleaner. Our pro face painters often pop their high-density sponges in the washing machine at 60 degrees which ensures they come out good as new! As Snazaroo paints are water-based, you won’t need abrasive cleaners to get the product out of your brushes.

Now you’re ready to start your face painting adventure! Transform your little ones into their favourite characters…for more inspiration, visit our How-To Guides page.
